The Weight of My Grandmother's Hair

"The Weight of my Grandmother’s Hair” is a conceptual written and visual editorial originally conceptualized for FGUK magazine that highlight's the jewelry design of two queer/WOC designers from New York. The accompanied text speaks to the transmission of culture, tradition and aesthetic through our grandmothers, while the visual juxtaposition of white elements hints at the interaction and assimilation of various cultures within Western cultures. The artisans selected all have thoroughly modern designs that are deeply rooted in their culture and backgrounds, showing that the retention of cultural identity is not at odds with modern fashion or society and that we can always repurpose the ancient to reflect our modern selves, be that a reflection of our sexual, ethnic/racial or cultural identities.
